House Mom in the Gentlemen's Club Business
Dear Dancers, I hope you had a great time for the Chinese New Year, it was amazing display of fireworks all around Asia. I wish the year of the Snake bring prosperity for all of you.
Now lets go back to business. One dancer Daniela from Brazil who lives in Japan told me that she is considering to take the Mama san position in her club. Well the role of a Mama san (House Mom), it changes from club to club, there is not really special requirements, whether a dancer is in this business for many years or just a beginner, the most important is the tolerance and the hability to deal with different type of people from different countries. Back in America the role of the House Mom has been taken very seriously from the past decade, of course in America the Western type Gentlemen's club industry is 20 years ahead of Asia when it comes to organizational structure.
Now lets define some positions, in Asia:
Mama san = House Mom and Dancer Manager, both roles together.
In 2009 the Gentlemen's Club Expo in Las Vegas, the main workshops and conferences was about the importance of the role of the House Mom, some of the most successful clubs has one, from Ricks Cabaret NY, to the Lodge Dallas Texas, to West Palm Beach Florida... etc. Some Mama san or most of them has been former dancers or strippers, and many of them still share the love and passion for this industry and try to give something back, they like to share experiences and taking care of the dancers in the club. I also consider very important the role of a good house mom in our industry. They are the filter between dancers and the Male Management, since the MM has to fully concentrate in the service and take care of the guests and billing and have not time to listen some dancers concerns, therefore the House Mom becomes a very important asset in daily operations.
Well let me give you the tips for this week:
1. When you have a problem with other dancers, personal, or job, I will advise you to talk first with your house mom in case you have one in your club. They are in the club to listen you and take care of every single detail. When it comes a problem with rude guests you can go directly with your Manager and he will make sure the security control the situation and if is necessary to escort the guest out of the club. In other words try to have a good communication with your Management and find out what concerns you can address with each manager.
2. Not all House Mom were top earning dancers before, some of them were just average dancers and working as a House Mom give them some way to do the right things, like a second chance, and they will try to help you and guide you with good intentions, I suggest you always listen, maybe they are trying to tell you not to make the same mistakes they made when they were dancers.
3. If you want to pursue a work as a Mama san, put your role clear with the club ownership, Professional Club Operators have a proper organizational structure in place, the role of the Mama san is acknowledge by everyone in detail, so dancers know: what, when and to whom address the problems or their concerns. In those professional clubs, Mama san also has define their tasks and roles for everyday very clearly.
Amateurs and Unprofessional Club operators just try to delegate any job or sometimes all the job to the first person they see, without considering experience, knowledge, capacity and aptitude towards the job as House Mom. This lead to a completely mess and chaos that will affect the dancers earnings eventually.
Is difficult in the beginning for a girl to separate her previous job as a dancer to her new role as Mama san, specially at night and with the lights and music, so you have to make very sure that you don't want to be a dancer anymore before you accept a House Mom job.
When you are willing to jump to the next step in the club business and pursue a career as House Mom, consider all these points and make your choice, because the Mama san job can be very stressful, patience is required a LOT OF PATIENCE... but once you are getting used to it and you have your role and tasks clear, you will enjoy your new position helping the other girls and dancers.
Have a great week :)
